Saturday afternoon I was wandering around Marietta Square in search of something new – something new to discover, something new to try, something new to write about – and I stumbled upon Paul’s Pot Pies.
Chef Paul was there and chatted with me about his business – they’ve been there for 26 years (so I didn’t really discover something new – just something new to me) and also have a catering business, Traveling Fare, which is how he got his start. They still do the catering side of things, but are also open seven days a week for lunch from 11AM to 3 PM. The lunch menu is simple – three kinds of pot pie (chicken, pot roast, and jamabalaya) with some quiches, sandwiches, and a selection of side items. But when you’re known for pot pie and that’s what most of your customers come in for, why mess with a good thing?
In addition, you can purchase pot pies to bring home in two sizes – 6″ (serves 2) or 10″ (serves 6). There are a number of different types of pies you can order for take home, including pizza, chicken curry, creole shrimp, Italian sausage, and vegetarian.
I am a fan of chicken pot pie, but this was chicken pot pie – I have to put it in italics because it was that good. The chicken was tender and moist – not at all dry; the vegetables were pleasantly al dente – not mushy. It was rich, but not too rich, with a thick, flavorful gravy that wasn’t gummy or soupy. It was, in a word, heavenly. If you’re a fan of the pot pie, you have to try Paul’s Pot Pies. Spend a day in Marietta Square – wander the shops, sit in the park, and visit Paul’s Pot Pies!
