There are a lot of places in Atlanta that claim to carry “vintage” clothing that are really little more than thrift stores, but Stefan’s Vintage Clothing is the real deal.
Opened in 1977, Stefan’s is the oldest vintage clothing store in Atlanta. Their selection ranges from the early 1900s through the 1970s and is one of the rare clothing stores that carries both men’s and women’s clothing and accessories. Many of the pieces are in near-mint condition and all are wearable today.
I first stumbled onto Stefan’s when I needed a few 1960s-appropriate dresses for a play I was in – after searching through numerous thrift stores and shops claiming to carry vintage clothes, someone suggested Stefan’s. I found exactly what I was looking for…plus a few other things I bought just for myself. Over the years, I’ve bought 4 or 5 gorgeous dresses (one of which is my go-to wedding-guest dress, another of which – a fabulous Marilyn Monroe-style form-fitting number – I wore to my 10-year high school reunion), a few pairs of earrings, and a fabulous Audrey Hepburn-style faux fur winter hat. The most regularly-wearable item I have found is my treasured vintage Nieman Marcus cashmere wrap, which I wear every winter when I need a formal coat.
There are formals gowns and spring dresses, bowling shirts and sport coats, hats, shoes, jewelry, and more. It’s worth the trip just to wander the store and browse the selection. Though they do not allow photography in the store without permission (in other words, don’t go just to try on fun clothes and take your picture for Facebook!), you are more than welcome to try on the clothes in the fitting rooms and be transported back to another era. If Katy Perry can rock a 1940s bathing suit on stage, surely you can pull off a cute little sweater set or spring dress in your daily life!
If you’re a fan of vintage clothing, I’m sure you’ll find at least one treasure there that you just have to have!
