When I first moved to Atlanta, over ten years ago, one of the first fun, tourist-y things I did with friends was go to the Stone Mountain Park Lasershow Spectacular. I am from Florida and the daughter of a couple of yankees, but the overwhelming salute to southern music in general and music about Georgia in particular made me feel like a Georgia native come home. On top of that, it was just a super-fun, laid back way to spend a Friday evening.
Complete with laserlights, graphics, characters and fireworks, the occasionally and appropriately kitch-y display brings you back to childhood – making it feel like every Friday night is the 4th of July. The lasershow is FREE (with a $10 per vehicle admission fee into the park). Pack a picnic (or purchase food at the park’s Marketplace) and bring a blanket and enjoy the 45-minute show with family and friends. (Alcohol and pets are not permitted on the Memorial Lawn – for answers to other Frequently Asked Questions, please visit the park’s website.)
The Lasershow starts at dusk tonight, sometime between 8:30 and 9:00 PM – and because of the upcoming week of Spring Break, will be presented every night from tonight through April 10. For the rest of the Lasershow schedule for the summer, click here. I suggest getting there early to secure your spot on the lawn! The Lasershow runs every Saturday night until October 31 – be sure to catch it before it’s over for the season!
So why not consider Stone Mountain Park’s Lasershow Spectacular – whether you’ve been in the past or are a newbie, I highly recommend it as a good ol’ time. I haven’t been in years, and I’m looking forward to going back this year and bringing the hubby and friends. While it’s not a trendy restaurant or hip nightclub, it is an awfully fun way to spend a Friday night!
