We trekked down to Mitchell Street on a whim a couple of weeks ago on a Wednesday night. We’d called for a reservation, since we’d heard it’s a good idea (it is – I strongly recommend it). If you’re familiar with Mitchell Street, you probably know you won’t get the warm fuzzies there – street parking only, a bit of an ominous feeling, but there was a warm glow coming from the low lights and candlelight in Lunacy Black Market and it makes the outside melt away once you’re inside.
Lunacy Black Market is the work of Chef Paul Luna (of Loca Luna and Eclipse di Luna fame), who was on-hand at the restaurant (as usual) and even drives my hubby a couple of blocks to pick up a bottle of wine from Wine Shoe, since we forgot to bring one (it’s BYO for now). He chatted with us as we dined and even brought us into the kitchen to teach us how to cook a dish, the Mediterranean-Style Chicken with cinnamon, curry and cardamom, at the end of the meal (pictured).
I’m not the first person to write about Lunacy Black Market and I know I won’t be the last – one thing every review I’ve read has in common is sheer shock and delight over the prices. We were a table of four and we tried almost everything on the menu – for under $45…total. Here are a few examples: Asian-Style Pork Ribs (5) = $2.95; Roasted Mushrooms in a Crushed Tomato Sauce = $3.10; Sautéed Shrimp (6) $3.75; Rice Cakes with Mozzarella and Herbs (3) = $1.50. Seriously. And I’d like to say that my favorite thing was the collard greens – more delicious collards I’ve never tasted!
And the best part about Lunacy Black Market – other than the prices – is that the staff is not there to turn tables. Once you reserve your table, it’s yours for the night. Chef Luna told us that they book 40 people per night and “you don’t get your bill until you ask for it.” You can enjoy a leisurely meal – try everything on the menu (definitely do!) – and not feel pressured because there are people waiting at the door to sit down. (Hence, the reason reservations are strongly suggested.)
Hours are Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM for lunch, and Monday through Saturday from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM for dinner. Make your reservation now! The decor is funky and fun, the staff is friendly and inviting, the food is delectable, the prices can’t be beat – what more can you ask for?
