#83 – Las Margaritas Mexican Restaurant – Marvelous Mojitos in Midtown

I’ll start by saying this probably won’t be the best Mexican/Latin food you’ve ever eaten. It’s good but not great; you’ll enjoy it but not be wowed. However, I do think they have the best mojitos in town – and that’s why I go to Las Margaritas.

Now, I’m no mojito expert, but I’ve had enough bad ones to know what makes a good one. (I won’t go into a lot of fancy bartender-speak here.) To me, a good mojito needs to have a balance of sweet and tart. Too much sugar or simple syrup and it’s overly sweet and that’s all you can taste. A good mojito also needs to have a decent amount of fresh mint. It should clog up your straw, it should turn the drink green; it should be muddled into soft leaves that you want to pick out and eat in order to finish every last bit of your drink.

Las Margaritas is a great place to go – especially in a large group – for a really fun night. The food is relatively inexpensive and they have some pretty fantastic drink specials. My favorite menu items are the cheese dip (inevitably) and my usual entrée, the carne asada. On top of that, the décor is whimsical and perhaps somewhat confusing – but how can you not have fun in a place with flying musical pink pigs painted across the ceiling?
