#151 – Roux on Canton in Downtown Roswell – New Orleans Style Seafood and Oyster Bar


A little over two months ago, in May 2010, Canton Street in downtown Roswell welcomed a new restaurant – Roux on Canton. Canton Street has become known as Roswell’s “restaurant row”, and Roux on Canton brings a new flavor as a New Orleans-style seafood and oyster bar. roux-on-canton-946-canton-street-roswell-ga-crawfish-poboy

Cajun influences are apparent in the menu, but their primary focus is on the combination of fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables with a Louisiana twist. We brought friends of ours to try it out, one of whom, Steve, is from New Orleans; we figured he’d be a good barometer for authenticity. To say he was pleased would be an understatement. Steve saw crawfish on the menu and immediately settled on the Crawfish Po’boy (pictured, top right), which he proclaimed one of the best he’d ever had with a generous portion of crawfish instead of a lot of filler. Steve was also really excited to see that they have Abita Andy Gator, a beer from his hometown, on draft! I started with an order of Grilled Oysters with citrus and chives (which looked so good that I didn’t realize until after they were gone that I didn’t photograph them!) On the lighter side, my hubby enjoyed the Artichoke and Heirloom Tomato Salad (pictured – middle right), with Vidalia onion, scallion, yellow bell pepper, and grilled shrimp in a red wine vinegar and olive oil dressing. It was so colorful and fresh looking – definitely on my must-try list for next time! The grilled fish of the day, Wahoo over a bed of jalapeño and aged cheddar grits, also looked amazing. Others on my next-time list include the Shrimp & Grits (duh!), Flash-Fried Louisiana Gator, Baked Oysters Canton (smothered in spinach and pimiento cheese, with a tomato-basil emulsion), and the Muffaletta. I’m hungry just thinking about it!

As if we weren’t totally stuffed, our server tempted us with fresh, hot beingets (pictured, below)a pastry made of deep-fried dough and sprinkled with powdered sugar (if you’ve never had these little morsels of deep-fried goodness, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside, you’re missing out!) Steve proclaimed them to be as delicious as the ones he loves at Café du Monde in New Orleans, but even fluffier and tastier.roux-on-canton-946-canton-street-roswell-ga-beignets
