If you’ve been looking for a delicious, satisfying approach to healthy eating, look no further than Brookhaven Bistro. I had heard of Brookhaven Bistro and had seen their sign on Peachtree Road, behind the Nuts n’ Berries Health Food Store – as many of you may have, too – but had not ventured in for lunch. However, once I saw a segment of theirs on Fox 5 Atlanta, I was intrigued and knew I wanted to check them out. (Full disclosure: Brookhaven Bistro graciously hosted me for lunch and our bill was comped by the house.)
Chef Chip’s theme for his bistro is “your favorite foods, just healthier”. Toss your idea of “health food” out the window; there’s no rabbit food here. The atmosphere is cozy yet simple. The tables and chairs filled up quickly as I sat chatting with my friend, Jessica, who is Brookhaven Bistro’s PR rep and had invited me to join her for lunch. A steady stream of customers made me realize that I was definitely in the right place for a great lunch!
We tried a number of dishes, and each was hearty, yet light; yummy and flavorful, while still obviously healthy and nutritious. First, we split a turkey burger, which Jessica referred to as the “Elbow Licker” (pictured, above). It lived up to its name – this is not a burger to be eaten neatly…or while wearing white! For me, turkey burgers can often be dry and flavorless, no matter what toppings you pile on. This one was juicy and delicious and packed with tasty goodness: turkey bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and sautéed onions & mushrooms, served on a cracked wheat bun. Chef Chip also treated us to his falafel pita, with slightly spicy homemade falafel with diced onions and tomatoes, and lettuce on a fluffy pita, served with a roasted eggplant salad (pictured, right). Falafel is always available on Wednesdays, so plan to visit then to try this yummy specialty. Other tempting entrées include an array of tempting salads, a fresh and crunchy veggie wrap complete with homemade hummus, and delicious fish dishes including broiled salmon and tilapia, salmon quesadillas, and tilapia tacos. Don’t take my word for it – view Brookhaven Bistro’s daily menu online. There are always daily specials, soups of the day and other items not on the daily menu. They even have a breakfast menu Monday through Friday, making it a great place to stop for that weekday mornings business client meeting or a convenient place to stop for a quick bite before work.
I highly recommend Brookhaven Bistro for a quick lunch with officemates or for a pre-spa day meal with girlfriends. You can fill up without feeling full and feel good about what you’re eating. No time to sit and eat? Choose something from the always chock-full take-out section (pictured, right). The many choices include Grilled Eggplant Salad, Curried Tofu Scramble, Mediterranean-Style Quinoa, Sprouted Moong Beans, and French Lentils, as well as Egg Salad, Chicken Salad, Tabouleh, and lots of other housemade specialties.
Brookhaven Bistro is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
