#258 – You’ll FLIP For FLIP Burger Boutique’s New Location, Opening Today in Buckhead, Features Tantalizing New Menu Items
Tonight at 5:00 PM, the much-anticipated new location of FLIP Burger Boutique opens in Buckhead. Brought to you by the same creative and culinary team who opened the original FLIP Burger in Midtown and in Birmingham, Alabama – Owners Barry Mills and Ron Stewart and Concept Chef Richard Blais (yes, of Top Chef, fame) – the new FLIP (located in the old Blockbuster Video, near the corner of Piedmont and Roswell roads) features Executive Chef Jason McClure and some mouthwatering new menu items.
I was lucky enough to attend a special by-invite blogger lunch yesterday to preview some of the new menu items, including the sinfully delicious and infamous Liquid Nitrogen Milkshakes. The crisp white and red mod interior, with whimsical artwork and custom “flipped” booths, is modern yet comfortable and welcoming. There’s also a cozy patio area and a sleek bar that invites you to come in, sit down and stay awhile.
After a brief intro by Chef Richard Blais, who describes FLIP’s concept as “fine dining disguised as a burger joint,” the food started coming…and coming. We tried a variety of burgers including: the Steak Tartare burger (wagyu flank steak, garlic, chili, capers, pickled onion, frisée salad, smoked mayo, sous-vide egg yolk), the Carnitas burger (pork cheek carnitas, salsa verde, radish salad), the Chorizo burger (spicy pork, romesco ketchup, hash browns, fried egg, manchego cheese, smoked mayo), the V-9 vegetarian burger (lentil, fava bean & cous cous, harissa, grilled tomato, pickled cauliflower) the Kbq burger, the Ossobuco burger, and the Belly Melt burger (descriptions below). And there was my favorite: the new Venison burger (pictured – venison tenderloin, braised red cabbage, juniper, hen of the woods mushroom).
A few side dishes worth mentioning: crispy FLIP french fries are created during a 3-day process that includes liquid nitrogen and frying in peanut oil and duck and pork fat – so tasty! I also sampled the potato skins, smothered in bacon marmalade and house-made “cheese wizard” (their playful, homemade – and much more yummy take on Cheez Whiz), and the fried pickles with buttermilk sriacha. There are also some tantalizing vegetarian options, including two vegetarian burger options, as well as a couple of fresh, crisp salads, like the Candycane Beets with goat cheese and licorice (pictured).
So if your stomach is growling and you’re thinking of driving over to FLIP Burger in Buckhead and camping out until 5:00 PM, let me just give you the icing on the cake: the liquid N2 milkshakes. FLIP uses liquid nitrogen throughout the restaurant – in making the French fries, martinis, milkshakes and more (you may remember Richard Blais’ “secret weapon” from his season of Top Chef). The milkshakes are a particular treat. I sampled the Krispy Kreme and the Nut’n Honey varieties today, but my favorite, by far, was the Nutella + Burnt Marshmallow (pictured). All I can say is… yum.
It’s hard to believe that there are still some things on the menu that I want to try, but it’s true – and always love a good excuse to bring back friends and family to restaurants I enjoy. A few menu items on my future-visit wish list are: the Tuna Tartare burger (spicy tuna, pine nuts, wasabi mayo, avocado, tagarashi, cucumber & mango yolk) and the new Duck Duck Goose burger (duck with a fois gras center, duck confit, rocket, kumquat). There’s also the Fois Gras milkshake, which I have heard is to-die-for; fellow blogger, Sean of The Hungry Southerner, has tried it and raved about it. It’s on my list for next time, too.
Burgers range in price from $6.50 to $29.00; side items – fresh or fried – range from $2.00 to $7.00; liquid N2 milkshakes are $5.00 to $9.00. Regular hours, after today’s 5:00 PM opening (for both the Buckhead and West Midtown locations), are Monday through Thursday from 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM; Friday and Saturday from 11:00 AM until 11:00 PM; and Sunday from 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM.
If you haven’t been to either of the other FLIP Burger locations, check this one out! And even if you have, it’s time to stop by again to check out the new menu items and see this new, fantastic location!
