The 75th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival is this weekend Friday through Sunday, April 15 – 17, 2011! This is, hands-down, my favorite spring festival in Atlanta. Maybe it’s because it was the first big festival I attended when I moved here eleven years ago, maybe it’s because it takes place in our gorgeous Piedmont Park, maybe it’s because of the dog agility contests that are so fun to watch. Whatever it is, this is one of my favorite weekends of the year in Atlanta!

When I moved to Atlanta in 2000, the Dogwood Festival was one of the first events that really made me appreciate my new city and new home. From the artists’ market to the delicious food from the vendors, the movie night to the dog agility demonstrations (my favorite!),the Atlanta Dogwood Festival has something for everyone. And it’s an amazing way to experience the park for the first time or revisit a favorite place.

My recommendation (or how I’ll be enjoying the Festival): a leisurely stroll through the artists’ market – perhaps picking up a piece of art or some unique jewelry from a local artist, then take in the dog agility and Disc Dog Exhibition (which will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM), and make time to enjoy some of the fantastic live music and entertainment on the Coca-Cola Main Stage, the Acoustic Stage, the International Stage, and if you have kids, don’t forget the Kids’ Village! Two exciting additions to help celebrate the 75th anniversary are a vintage ferris wheel and carousel! A classic, 9-story Seattle Ferris Wheel built in 1963 will give riders a whole new perspective of Piedmont Park and Midtown, and a gorgeous, fully-restored, 1965 vintage carousel gives a fun nostalgic touch. And there’s so much more! For a complete schedule of events, visit the Atlanta Dogwood Festival website.

Also, since the 75th Anniversary of the Atlanta Dogwood Festival coincides with the 75th Anniversary of the publication of Gone With the Wind (stay tuned to 365Atlanta for more exciting events – some VIP invitation-only – around the GWTW Anniversary!), you can stop in the Margaret Mitchell House (at Peachtree and 10th Street) and receive FREE admission on Saturday and Sunday, April 16 and 17, 2011!
