Atlanta Ballet Presents “Ignition: New Choreographic Voices” – Three New Works by Up-and-Coming Choreographers, May 13-15, 2011
Last week, I had the distinct pleasure of getting to preview three new works by up-and-coming choreographers at the Atlanta Ballet – the works of Ignition: New Choreographic Voices. In the studio of the Atlanta Ballet’s new home, the Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre in west Midtown, I had a chance to experience these three breathtaking new works – and now you can see them this weekend on the intimate stage at the Alliance Theatre, May 13 – 15, 2011.
Ignition: New Choreographic Voices features the work of Amy Seiwart, who was named one of Dance Magazine‘s “25 to Watch” in 2005 and whose work “Home in 7” is an ode to Atlanta based on seven poems by Marc Bamuthi Joseph, a prize-winning poet and graduate of Morehouse college. Her work brings our city and Joseph’s poetry to life in collaboration with violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain. Also featured is Bennyroyce Royon, whose work “Flux” is a multimedia presentation including the video projection from graphic artist Rodrigo Ribeiro and musician Son Lux’s composition. Finally, Gina Patterson, who was praised for her “startling originality” in Back Stage, presents a stunning work the reflects on urbanization and deforestation and its affects on our lives and our human connections (see video clip below). These three unique works provide something for everyone in keeping with the Atlanta Ballet’s tradition of supporting young artists and premiering edgy, new works.
Performances are Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14, 2011 at 8:00 PM (these two performances have sold out), as well as Saturday, May 14 at 2:00 PM and Sunday, May 15 at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
