Atlanta Magazine Celebrates 50 Years with a Stunning Exhibit at the Atlanta History Center, through September 18, 2011
Atlanta Magazine has been a staple in the city since its first issue was printed in May, 1961. Predating integration, the first issue of Creative Loafing, the opening of Phipps Plaza, and the first Home Depot stores, Atlanta Magazine has grown and changed with the city of Atlanta and documented important event the city has seen!
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Atlanta Magazine, the publication has partnered with the Atlanta History Center to present a unique and stunning exhibit: Atlanta Magazine 1961-2011: 50 Years of the Changing City. In addition to colorful timelines of important events in Atlanta over the last 50 years and poster-sized magazine covers from some truly memorable issues, there is an incredible video featuring interviews with Atlanta dignitaries such as former Mayors Sam Massell and Andrew Young and baseball great Hank Aaron, among others.
There’s also a technology component to the exhibit: utlitizing QR codes, smartphone users can scan unique codes at various point along the exhibit to learn even more, explore dozens more magazine covers and delve more deeply into the history of the magazine and the city.
I believe every visitor will be drawn to a different part of this exhibit: if you’re foodie and into the food culture of Atlanta, you’ll gravitate toward the dining covers; history buffs will be fascinated by the timelines of events through the decades. I found one cover particularly touching, the one that reads: “Hello Everyone, Well, today is another day in Vietnam” (pictured – below) – my father’s service in Vietnam made reading this letter home, from soldier Thomas Tyree to his wife, one of my favorite parts of the collection.
Atlanta Magazine 1961-2011: 50 Years of the Changing City is housed in the Kenan Research Center at the Atlanta History Center and is FREE (you DO NOT have to pay regular AHC admission) and open to the public, through September 18, 2011. To access the Kenan Research Center, park in the AHC parking garage and follow the sidewalk to the building behind the main museum – or simply ask at the admission desk. Museum hours are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM until 5:30 PM and Sunday from 12:00 noon until 5:30 PM.
