Atlanta Magazine has been a staple in the city since its first issue was printed in May, 1961. Predating integration, the first issue of Creative Loafing, the opening of Phipps Plaza, and the first Home Depot stores, Atlanta Magazine has grown and changed with the city of Atlanta and documented important event the city has seen!

In addition to colorful timelines of important events in Atlanta over the last 50 years and poster-sized magazine covers from some truly memorable issues, there is an incredible video featuring interviews with Atlanta dignitaries such as former Mayors Sam Massell and Andrew Young and baseball great Hank Aaron, among others.

There’s also a technology component to the exhibit: utlitizing QR codes, smartphone users can scan unique codes at various point along the exhibit to learn even more, explore dozens more magazine covers and delve more deeply into the history of the magazine and the city.

I believe every visitor will be drawn to a different part of this exhibit: if you’re foodie and into the food culture of Atlanta, you’ll gravitate toward the dining covers; history buffs will be fascinated by the timelines of events through the decades. I found one cover particularly touching, the one that reads: “Hello Everyone, Well, today is another day in Vietnam” (pictured – below) – my father’s service in Vietnam made reading this letter home, from soldier Thomas Tyree to his wife, one of my favorite parts of the collection.
