Another Burger Joint for Atlanta? Yup – and It’s Smashing Good! Smashburger Opens First Location in Buckhead, With 29 More to Come!
I’m a huge fan of the burger – from way before it was trendy and cool to like burgers, even when it was decidedly uncool to eat red meat. My dad used to make us juicy, fresh-from-the-grill burgers when I was a kid – stuffed with bleu cheese or cheddar, with onions mixed in to the ground beef, with a combo of beef, pork and veal… The variations were endless! I don’t need a fancy-schmancy burger (thought I won’t pass one of those up, either) – just one that’s cooked the way I like it with some yummy toppings and I’m happy.
So I ask you, does Atlanta need another burger joint? Whether we need one or not, we’ve got Smashburger – and after my lunch there last week, I say, YIPPEE!
Smashburger isn’t just a burger joint – it’s better than mass-produced fast food but more reasonably-priced than fancy gourmet burgers. A self-proclaimed “fast-casual ‘better burger’ restaurant,” the menu is simple (which makes me happy – fewer choices means less decision time for me while standing in line to order) but has enough choices to make everyone happy. Burgers come in two sizes -1/3 and 1/2 pound – and in a variety of styles, like the Classic Smashburger, the All-American Smashburger, BBQ Bacon and Cheese, Mushroom Swiss, Spicy Baja, or my personal favorite, specially made just for our city, the Atlanta Smashburger, which features peach BBQ sauce, Wicked Pimina cheese, grilled jalapenos and Vidalia coleslaw (pictured below).
In addition to burgers, guests can also choose from marinated chicken sandwiches, grilled and seared hotdogs, and signature salads, as well as a variety of sides, such as fried pickles, haystack onions, beefy chili, and four different kinds of French fries: regular fries, Smashfries and Sweet Potato Smashfries (drizzled with olive oil, rosemary and garlic), or Veggiefrites, which are flash fried asparagus spears, carrot sticks, and green beans. Guests can also choose to sip on beer, wine, Häagen-Dazs shakes, and root-beer floats – I can vouch for the peach shake…enough said.
Here’s what you can expect (besides yummy food): It’s a casual, order-at-the-counter type place, with an open kitchen so you can see that your food is being prepared fresh for you. The friendly staff take your order, deliver your food, refill your drinks and gladly answer your questions and always have a smile for you. It’s truly one of the friendliest restaurants I’ve visited in a long time.
The first Atlanta Smashburger location opened in July 2011 in Buckhead, near the corner of Piedmont Road and Sidney Marcus, and the second location in Johns Creek is scheduled to open in August 2011 near the corner of Medlock Bridge and State Bridge roads. More are coming soon – so keep an eye out for one near you – or head to Buckhead or Johns Creek to check them out!
