Decatur Celebrates the Opening of Its Newest Sweet Tooth-Satisfier, Sugar Moon Bake Shop – Now Open in Oakhurst

If you’ve driven through Oakhurst’s popular intersection (at East Lake Drive and Oakview) lately, you’ve probably noticed the already popular Sugar Moon Bake Shop has officially opened its doors. After a “soft opening” of about two weeks, Sugar Moon officially celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, June 16 and we took a break on a gorgeous summer day to visit owners, Amy and Cathy, and to sample a taste (or two or three) of their delicious wares.

The shop’s two owners, cousins Amy Kiefer (Chief Cupcake Baker) and Catherine Pfitzer (Chief Cupcake Marketer) were on hand to talk to us about the shop and tell us all about their favorite flavors (see video!). Both formerly worked for non-profits and Amy used cupcake baking as a way to de-stress after particularly emotional, trying days working with crime victims. Her hobby became a passion, which became the beginnings of Sugar Moon.

The stars of the show are Sugar Moon’s signature cupcakes, an extremely moist, flavorful cake style that is complemented by the perfect amount of icing that melts in your mouth. I am usually skeptical of cupcakes – they seem like a fad that has come and gone and I tend to think most are dry with a disproportionate cake-to-icing ratio (as in way, way, way too much icing, folks!), but Sugar Moon’s cupcakes are so moist and delectable that I found myself trying one after another and then purchasing a box to take home! Gourmet cupcake flavors rotate regularly (not all are listed on the website) – on our visit we found an array of mouthwatering flavors with a few particular stand-outs: Banana Pudding (with a scoop of pudding in the center – wow!), Key Lime, Salted Caramel Chocolate, and Vanilla Rosewater (an elegant, lightly rose-flavored beauty).

In addition to cupcakes, Sugar Moon is also offering other sweets to satisfy your sweet tooth: five rotating flavors of locally-made gourmet ice cream from High Road Craft (which we here at 365Atlanta definitely love!), hand-crafted oatmeal crème pies, cookies, and other rotating baker’s specials.
